Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Anna Shinoda was raised in a mountain town so small it lacked a stoplight. She used to escape into the high branches of trees to read and dream stories, out of reach from her own family skeleton. Eventually she climbed down with Learning Not to Drown, her debut novel. Visit Anna at AnnaShinoda.com.

I've been wanting to read this book for years and I finally got to. The story itself is quite easy, but the message is strong. Trying to love someone even though they are hurting you and others while trying not to lose yourself and make a life... There were quite a few eye opening lines for me and I don't get them often in books like this... Definitely worth the read (and the re-read)

I've been patiently waiting for this book to get released. Since I knew that Anna Shinoda is writing YA novels, I was excited to read her debut. Even with the release of the title, I literally jumped, because it was making me nervous to know I'll soon be able to read it.Let me first summarize the story a bit:Clare is the youngest of three kids and the only girl. She's doing great atschool, loves swimming and being on the road with her friends, even though her mom's trying to get her 'in line' by trying to forbid everything. She seems lovely, really smart and has one big wish: To go to a college she'd picked. But unfortunalty her family is having a huge anchor that is dragging her down: Her brother Luke, who's been in and out of prison since she's a kid. And even through her mother openly loves him more than her, she loves him, too. But with time and things happening, she's starting to ask herself why she's loving him.Shinoda's writing style is fresh, full of emotions and vivid. Following all the events in the past and present, Clare's thoughts and decicions are logical and something I can really relate to. I love the little normality that pops up every once in a while and I really like how Shinoda managed to make Luke being a 'nice guy' even though he's a criminal. I really loved to watch Clare's family getting along and not getting along, because it felt real, felt like how it probably really happening in families when someone is in prison.I liked the short chapters of the past, could feel the soft emotions of the young Clare being all pure and the love towards her brother being real and full of passion. Even her other brother Peter was an important character and I was really eager to get to know why he was so full of rage and anger all the time. Because the real victims of everything Luke's done were his family members. As being a first born child, I can only guess how it feels to be the „little one“ in the family. But I know how it feels when your family is not ready to choose you. I'm the sister of a brother, who's doing illegal things too, getting in the way of laws as well, but my family is always there for him. Sometimes it is really making me upset and that's why I know how Clare feels like and I understand how she's dealing with all of this. I couldn't find better words for all that.I love how the story evolved with every page and every chapter and I also love the Skeleton part. That drugged feeling that is never leaving, still lingering around even though you don't want to think about it. Shinoda described it pretty intense and understandable. At some parts I was nearly going to scream 'god, Clare, just leave your family already', because it was tiring seeing her getting shed to pieces. But at the same I understood why she'd never left. For me, the book is a treasure. I think you can't say who should read it, because I'm an adult and I enjoyed reading to the fullest.

Danke Anna!

I bought it for a friend, who is a big Anna / and Mike Shinoda fan. She loves it. Now I bought it for myself again. Anna is an amazing author. Anna and somehow Mike did an amazing Job! it doesn`t matter if you like Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park) or not. The book is just AMAZING!!!

Thank you so much for this book. It went much deeper than I would have thought. "Broken glass, broken bones, broken trust, broken home, broken family, broken heart, broken, broken, broken, broken." "No more, I resolve. No more floating back into my good memories. No more avoiding the truth." "The relief is overwhelming. I stuff the envelope under my shirt. The guilt is overwhelming. It's my money. Why do I feel like I'm stealing?" -/- This book is so full of truth. Thank you Anna.

Sehr mitreisend geschrieben.
